The Saugeen Ojibway Nation (SON) has deep and long-standing concerns regarding nuclear power generation in Anishnaabekiing. OPG has proposed a Deep Geological Repository (DGR) for the low and intermediate level radioactive waste held in our Territory at the Bruce Power site. OPG has committed to the SON that they will not go ahead with the project without the consent of the SON Communities and that they would work with the SON to address the legacy issues. The legacy issues are the current and deep long-standing impacts nuclear power production and the ongoing operations of Bruce Power have on our People and Territory.
The responsibilities of the Nuclear File Coordinator are to provide support and coordination to the Joint Chiefs and Councils and Advisory Team on the SON’s nuclear power, waste and legacy issues. The Nuclear File Coordinator will organize and assist with research, planning, coordination and support for the Joint Chiefs and Councils, Committees and Working Groups throughout the Community Process. The Coordinator acts as a liaison with the proponents, governments and external parties to the SON. The Coordinator will organize, manage and support a community-driven process and communications plan so that information related to the SON’s nuclear power, waste and legacy issues are available and accessible to SON members and citizens.
