Archeology Coordinator

**Priority given to Saugeen Ojibway Nation Members

The Archeology Coordinator will support the Environment Office on all work related to archeology. This includes; participating in the duty to consult and accommodate SON, reviewing proposed developments in the Territory, as well as building on SON’s ability to create, catalogue and maintain archeological files. Part of this work involves coordinating the archeology field monitors and finding educational opportunities for the larger SON community.
Under the supervision of the Resources and Infrastructure Manager, the Archeology Coordinator may be assigned other specific tasks based on their skill-set.

Accountable to: Executive Administrative Officer / Joint Chiefs and Councils of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation

Term of Employment: Full-time - Permanent

Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week (Monday-Friday | Some weekends and evenings may be required).

Responsibilities:

  • Organize training opportunities for archaeology field monitors
  • Coordinate logistics to get monitors into the field 
  • Act as a monitor as required 
  • Create, maintain and support systems used for cataloging and storing artifacts in the temporary care of the Environment Office.
  • Collect, organize and maintain digital archives of all existing archeological studies, reports, associated maps and historical documents relevant to the SON Territory
  • With the support of the systems staff, ensure all relevant archaeology studies or sites are mapped using GIS
  • Assist the Resources and Infrastructure department in coordinating archaeology reviews
  • As directed, work with community members and other knowledge holders to record, store and share information relevant to SON
  • Participate in ongoing discussions and efforts related to planning a SON cultural center
  • Respect the confidentiality of SON, the community and employee information
  • Deal professionally and courteously with all internal & external contacts
  • Adhere to all SON policies and procedures, including Health & Safety guidelines
  • Seek guidance / direction as needed
  • Act as an ambassador for SON at all times
  • General administrative duties
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Degree in anthropology, archaeology or related field an asset
  • Applied experience in archaeology an asset
  • Experience working with / for a First Nations Council
  • Knowledge of, or interest in learning relevant legislation and regulations regarding archaeology
  • Demonstrate good judgment
  • Understanding of SON Territory, rights, interests, culture and traditions
  • Strong planning, organizational and time management skills
  • Able to multitask and work efficiently with competing priorities
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Good computer skills including Google sheets and docs as it applies to data base management
  • Valid Ontario G driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Willingness to provide the results of a Criminal Background Check
  • Willingness to take all reasonable and necessary precautions to ensure personal health & safety and that of fellow workers 
  • This position requires someone who can sit and use the computer for long periods of time 
  • Able to walk, stand or sit outdoors for long periods, bend and lift up to 30lbs
  • Must be able to use the computer, phone and other office equipment such as scanners and copiers
  • Excellent communication skills, oral and written
