Energy Manager

**Priority given to Saugeen Ojibway Nation Members

The Energy Manager is the principal Environment Office (EO) contact for all proponents of energy development within SON territories This includes, but is not limited to, organizations such as Ontario Power Generation that are involved in the planning, construction and operation of nuclear waste repositories.
This role will perform research, provide policy analysis and other relevant information to help coordinate SON’s response to Nuclear/Environmental issues that affect the community’s rights and interests This role will also represent SON at meetings with the Crowns, public, media and other organizations.

Accountable to: Executive Administrative Officer / Joint Chiefs and Councils of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation

Term of Employment: Full-time - Permanent

Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week (Monday-Friday | Some weekends and evenings may be required).

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, organize, facilitate and participate in community meetings on nuclear issues within the SON territory
  • Consult with Joint Council to develop, establish and maintain processes for addressing nuclear issues
  • Meet with special interest groups, professional associations and other groups to promote SON’s rights and interests as they relate to nuclear issues and the impact on their territory
  • Ensure Joint Council is well briefed on nuclear issues 
  • Use discretion to protect SON confidential information
  • Report on the progress of tasks and developments related to the work of the committees
  • Research and brief SON Advisory Team on Ontario policy on nuclear waste issues
  • Review and arrange for peer review of Environmental Assessment technical reports as needed 
  • Assist in setting terms of reference for research and environmental assessments
  • Prepare discussion papers and briefings for presentation to Joint Council and committees
  • Assemble research, policy analysis and other information as requested
  • Coordinate EO studies, to ensure that SON’s goals and objectives on nuclear issues are being met
  • Document the history of SON and as it relates to nuclear projects in Traditional Territory
  • Prepare summary briefs and report to EO Manager on file development
  • Develop and coordinate budgets and plans related to nuclear files
  • Prepare and present quarterly budget reports
  • Analyze memoranda, submissions and reports
  • Prepare summary briefs and report findings to EO Manager on file development
  • Liaise with Crown officials, legal representatives and other organizations,
  • Maintain records of meetings and project files
  • Complete monthly reports and observe retention requirements
  • Prepare funding applications for nuclear files 
  • Develop, implement and evaluate community communication strategies and programs as they pertain to OPG/DGR developments and government policies
  • Research and prepare media communications for SON members on and off reserve
  • Conduct surveys to identify interests and concerns of specific groups
  • Organize and present events to increase awareness of SON nuclear issues
  • Prepare briefings for Joint Council prior to interviews and news conferences
  • Adhere to all SON policies and procedures, including Health & Safety guidelines
  • Respect the confidentiality of SON, the community and employee information
  • Deal professionally and courteously with all internal and external contacts
  • Seek guidance / direction as necessary in the performance of duties
  • Act as an ambassador for SON at all times
  • Willingness to take all reasonable and necessary precautions to ensure personal health and safety and that of fellow workers 
  • General office duties
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Degree in Business Administration preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years demonstrated research experience
  • Willingness to provide the results of a Criminal Background Check 
  • Strong knowledge of environmental issues as they relate to nuclear power
  • Awareness of nuclear issues in SON territory
  • Experience interacting with the nuclear sector and other related industries
  • Valid Ontario G driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle for work
  • Strong time management and organizational and skills
