Joint Council Political Work

The Joint Council of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation (SON) comprises the elected Chiefs and Councils of the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation (Neyaashiinigmiing) and the Chippewas of Saugeen First Nation. Together, they represent the unified political voice of SON, working collaboratively to uphold our Rights, protect our lands and waters, and advance the interests of our communities.

Our Mandate

The Joint Council is committed to:

  • Asserting and protecting SON's Aboriginal and Treaty Rights.

  • Engaging in political advocacy on matters affecting our Territory and people.

  • Collaborating with governments, organizations, and other Indigenous Nations to advance our collective goals.

  • Ensuring transparent communication and engagement with SON Members.

Key Initiatives

The Joint Council is actively involved in several critical areas:

  • Land and Resource Stewardship: Advocating for responsible management and protection of our natural resources, including forests, waters, and wildlife.

  • Water Protection: Supporting initiatives like the Coastal Waters Monitoring Program (CWMP) to uphold our responsibilities to the lands and waters of Saukiing Anishnaabekiing.

  • Energy and Infrastructure Projects: Engaging with proponents to ensure developments respect SON’s Rights and long-term interests.

  • Legal and Policy Advocacy: Addressing legal matters and influencing policy decisions that impact our Nation.

  • Community Engagement: Facilitating discussions and consultations to keep Members informed and involved.
