INFORMATION RELEASE
October 20th, 2023

SAUGEEN FIRST NATION, ON – Members of the Saugeen Shores Police Service (SSPS) and the Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are working together on a joint investigation following the discovery of bones.

On October 19, 2023, a citizen contacted police after discovering what appeared to be human skeletal remains at the Southampton compost site and called SSPS.

After a thorough examination by a forensic anthropologist, it has been determined that the located remains are Indigenous in origin and have been determined to be historic in nature and will not be part of a criminal investigation.

“We appreciate that the discovery of ancestral remains is a challenging time for members of First Nation communities, and supportively, we extend empathy and healing energy to those who may require comfort during this time’, offered Chief Conrad Ritchie.

While preparations are underway for ceremonial repatriation, tobacco has been offered and a sacred fire has been lit to help facilitate the restful journey of Spirit back to Creator.
Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
