Archaeology Assistant

Program:   Senior Manager, Saugeen Ojibway Nation Environment Office

Terms of Employment: Full Time

Salary : $47,826 - $62,174

Hours of Work : 37.5 (some evenings and weekend may be periodically required)

Job Location : Wiarton, Ontario (Not remote work)

Anticipated Start Date : Immediately 

Closing Date  : September 11 , 2025

The archeology coordinator is responsible for supporting the Environment Office on all work related to archeology. This support includes participating in the duty to consult and accommodate SON on proposed developments in the Territory, as well as building SON’s internal capacity, memory and archives related to archeology. Part of this capacity building work involves coordinating the archeology field monitors program and broader community educational opportunities.

Depending on workload, this role (under the supervision of the Resources and Infrastructure Manager) may be assigned specific tasks based on skill-set.

Required Experience: 

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in an archeological setting
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a related field

Recommended  Experience: 

  • Diploma in Administrative Assistant, Office Assistant, or a related field
  • Experience working with First Nation government
  • Minimum of 1 year experience working with relevant legislation regarding Archeology within a First Nation government
  • Applied experience in the archeology, culture and history of SON Territory

Job Description:

  • Organize training opportunities for archaeology field monitors.
  • Support Resources and Infrastructure manager and team to coordinate archaeology technical reviews and fieldwork for project-specific consultation.
  • Coordinate, attend and record meetings as needed
  • Organize logistics to get archaeology field monitors into the field for project-specific field work.
  • Act as a monitor for fieldwork as needed.
  • Maintain a system for cataloguing and storing artifacts in the care of the Environment Office.
  • Collect, organize, and maintain a digital archive of all existing archeological studies, reports, and associated maps and historical documents relevant to SON Territory.
  • Ensure all relevant archaeology studies or sites are appropriately mapped using GIS (coordinate with the staff who maintain the GIS system).
  • Work with knowledge holders to record, store, and share information relevant to archaeology, as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate good judgment
  • Respect the confidentiality of SON, the community and employee information.
  • Deal professionally & courteously with all internal & external contacts.
  • Seek guidance / direction as necessary in the performance of duties.
  • Act as an ambassador for SON at all times
  • General administrative duties
  • Other duties as assigned.
