Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC)
Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) reflects the importance of Indigenous peoples being meaningfully involved in decisions that may affect our lands, rights, and way of life. It emphasizes that information must be shared openly, engagement must happen early, and decisions must be approached with respect for Indigenous rights and responsibilities.
At the Saugeen Ojibway Nation Environment Office, FPIC helps guide how we review proposed activities in SON Territory. This includes ensuring information is clear and accessible, identifying potential impacts, and supporting informed decision-making that aligns with SON values and priorities.
The slides below provide an overview of what FPIC means and how it relates to the work of the Environment Office.
