Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation Press Release re: Ancestral Remains found near Saugeen.

Neyaashiinigmiing, ON: On Thursday, October 19th, human skeletal remains were discovered at Southampton Landfill's compost site in Saugeen Shores. Saugeen Shores Police Service (SSPS) and the
Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called in and an examination by a forensic anthropologist concluded the bones are Indigenous and historic in nature. OPP indicated there is no
concern for public safety and no criminal investigation will take place.
The ancestral remains were found in landscaping matter that was unloaded by a landscaping company working in the Sauble Beach region.

“Our intention will focus on proper repatriation of the ancestral remains; paying attention to ceremony and proper protocol,” stated Chief Greg Nadjiwon.

“We appreciate that the discovery of ancestral remains is a challenging time for members of First Nation communities, and supportively, we extend empathy and healing energy to those who may require
comfort during this time,” offered Chief Conrad Ritchie.

A sacred fire was lit last week at Saugeen First Nation to facilitate a peaceful journey of Spirit back to
Creator.
